This Saturday, while Verona’s Little League teams are walking from Verona Park to Everett Field for the opening day of baseball season, you can walk across New Jersey. And chances are, you won’t be alone.
The FreeWalkers, a New Jersey-based long-distance walking group, is going to be holding three walks in April and May to get people out on the 100-mile New Jersey segment of the East Coast Greenway trail. This is a pathway that will eventually run from Maine to Florida, much of it on traffic-free trails.
You can walk the New Jersey segment at any time this year, and record your walk on a special Web site. But beginning on April 9, the FreeWalkers will have three coordinated walks that could make the trek easier. Saturday will be what the group is calling ” TR2NB40“, a one-day 40-mile walk from Trenton to New Brunswick along the D&R Canal. That will be followed on April 16 by “NB2MP10” an easy 10-mile jaunt from New Brunswick to Metropark. The finale is the “NJ2NY50” –The Big Walk-a one-day, 50-mile walk from Metropark to New York Penn Station on May 21.
The walks are free, although the Greenway folks probably wouldn’t mind if you made a donation or two. For more information, see the CrossJerseyWalk Web site.
