If you have children in Laning Avenue School, you know Charlie Marion even though you may not know that you know him. Charlie is the crossing guard at the corner of Laning and Otsego, and he does his job with delight–and authority. He knows the kids at his corner well enough to ask them about their day, he coaxes the stragglers along and he is not above reading drivers the riot act when they park too close to the intersection or take his corner too fast.
He is also now the winner of MyVeronaNJ’s 2010 Holiday Lights House contest. Yup, the second slide in Fred Goode’s slideshow below is Charlie’s house at 83 Derwent, and it took the contest with 132 votes to 81 for its closest competitor, 65 Woodland Avenue. It’s one of several brightly lit houses on the north end of Derwent, which give the whole neighborhood a festive shine. Take a drive by tonight on your way to or from Christmas Eve services.
Congratulations to Charlie and his family: We’ll be dropping off some holiday treats from Hobcaw Cafe later this morning. And thanks to all of you who participated in this year’s contest, sharing your houses and voting.
