On November 1, the Verona Town Council congratulated the winners of the Verona Environmental Commission’s “Idle Free Verona” poster contest. Back on “Walk to School Day”, October 6, some 100 students from all four
Verona public elementary schools turned in their own messages about the importance of turning off car engines while waiting for children at school. As part of the contest, the kids learned that an idling vehicle emits 20 times more pollution than one traveling at 30 miles per hour.
One winner was chosen from each elementary school: Sydney Theilmeier from Forest Avenue, John Rosinski from Brookdale, Sarah Cole from Laning and Kelly Esposito from F. N. Brown School. They are pictured above, left to right, with Council member Bob Manley, Mayor Teena Schwartz, VEC Chairman Gerard Shimonaski, VEC Vice-Chairperson Gloria Machnowski, Council member Jay Sniatkowski and Deputy Mayor Frank Sapienza. Each of the children received a certificate and a $50 prize check.
All posters were exhibited at the schools and will be on display at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland from November 15 through November 30.
