Cheer Team Sponsors Clinics, Fundraisers

The VHS competitive cheer team will be hosting a series of programs, beginning this week. On October 4, 5 and 6, there will be a cheering clinic for girls in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The clinic will be held in the gym at Verona High School from 3:30-4:30 p.m. each day and the cost is $30 per child. To enroll yours, send an email to Coach Jamie Wronski.

Then on Wednesday, October 19, the cheer team will be holding its annual showcase to benefit the breast cancer research foundation Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The Breast Cancer Showcase starts at 7 p.m. in the VHS gym and it will cost you $3 per person to see it.

The team will also be holding a pie sale fundraiser. The girls will be taking orders from October 17 through November 9. More details soon.

VHS Cheerleaders Set Fund Raiser

Verona High School cheerleaders are selling a $20 kit that contains everything you will need to support your favorite Hillbilly athlete this fall.

The kits, which must be ordered by July 31, contain a megaphone, maroon and white pom-poms, a Hillbilly logo for your car window, a Verona “V” face tattoo and more. The order form is here.

Cheer Team Tryouts

The Verona High School Cheer team will be hosting tryouts next week for the 2011-2012 season. The dates are June 6, 8, 9 at VHS from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tryouts are open to high school students, as well as any incoming freshman for the 2011-2012 school year.

Cheerleaders Head To Competition

Verona High School’s cheerleaders are headed to Ocean City, Maryland today for their first-ever national competition. “Reach the Beach” will pit the girls against more than two dozen squads from across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.

The team includes Tyler Ballantyne, Catherine Farley, Lisa Fitzgerald, Paige Gibson, Teddya Konopka, Brittany Liska, Ashley MacMoyle, Alyssa Malfettano, Amanda Massaker, Kiana Miller, Gabriela Mercurio, Nikki Peterson, Claudia Rollo, Alyssa Streifer, Briana Tansey and Kristin Visentin. To perfect the high-energy, high-flying stunts in their three-minute routine, the girls practice from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. They’ve competed in five local competitions before heading to Maryland, placing fairly well in each according to their coach, Jamie Wronski. If the girls take first at Ocean City, their entry fee to the American Cheer & Dance Association’s world competition will be paid.

Cheerleaders For A Cure

This Friday, October 22, Verona High School’s cheerleaders are hosting a fundraiser for the breast cancer research organization Susan G. Komen For The Cure. The event, called “Caring Kids Fight For A Cure”, will feature the VHS and Verona Eagles cheerleaders, as well as Fairleigh Dickinson University‘s cheerleaders and dance team. It all begins at 7 p.m. in the VHS gym, and the cost is $3 per person.

VHS Cheerleaders Holding Tricky Tray

The VHS cheerleaders are holding a tricky tray fundraiser on March 25, and if you want to go, the deadline for buying advance tickets is drawing near. Tickets for “Pretty in Pink” are $20 in advance and will include 1 sheet of general basket tickets. Entry will be $25 at the door and will not include basket tickets.

“Pretty in Pink” will take place at the VHS cafeteria and the doors will open at 6 p.m. Dessert and coffee will be provided. To get your tickets, send a check payable to “VHS Cheerleading” to Dana Visentin, 59 Woodland Avenue, by March 15. You can also contact her by e-mail.

Events For The Week Of January 18

This is an amazingly light week for activity in Verona, and we can thank the high school for that. As the parent of any teenager can tell you, this is midterms week at VHS, and so there are no sporting events until Thursday evening. More about that in a moment.

Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. day, and both Our Lady of the Lake and the public schools are closed. That gives you plenty of opportunity to get to O’Neils Restaurant to contribute to the fundraiser for Carmela Vece. The Verona Environmental Commission and Board of Education both have meetings on Tuesday evening, and both are open to the public.

Several events for those of you with young children. Children Having Individual Learning Differences (C.H.I.L.D.) is hosting a workshop on physical therapy options at the VHS media center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. OLL is having an open house for its nursery school on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday from 1:30-3:30; Creative Beginnings will have its open house on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. (We hope you’ve been reading Tracy Bermeo’s pieces on Verona’s nursery school options.)

The sports teams get back in gear on Thursday, with the boys’ basketball teams going up against Arts High; they’re back on the boards against Fairlawn on Friday, and all games are home. The girls’ basketball squads play away in Montclair at Immaculate Conception on Friday and Montclair Kimberley Academy on Saturday. The varsity cheerleaders are in competition in Kenilworth on Saturday.

If you’d rather work on your old house than sports, the Montclair Historical Society begins a four-part series on remodeling and renovating older homes on Saturday. Garbage pickup is on a regular schedule despite the holiday, and there is another curbside Christmas tree pickup on Wednesday.

Cheerleaders-In-Training

The halftime entertainment at Verona High School’s home basketball games is usually provided by the cheerleaders, and the other night’s girls’ basketball game was no exception. Only this time, the enthusiastic dancing and cheers were provided by an adorable miniature version of the Verona cheer squad.

Trained by the varsity squad in a few sessions and dressed in Maroon and White, these pint-sized future members of the varsity cheering squad even included a few “flyers” who, thankfully, were firmly held down to earth by their high school mentors.

We hope you have as much fun watching the video as we had taking it!
