Lovie

Her name is Lovie and she needs somebody new to love her.  This young Boxer-Shepherd mix was surrendered recently to the Montclair Animal Shelter by her Verona owner. The volunteers who have been with her say Lovie is very good on a leash, playful and energetic when not in her crate and she knows how to sit and take treats very gently.

The Montclair Animal Shelter is located at 77 Willow Street and it is open in the afternoon from Tuesday to Sunday, except Thursday afternoon. There are other dogs that need new homes and many cats, from kittens to full grown, available for adoption. Call 973-744-8600 for more information.

The service will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, which is on North Fullerton Avenue between Bloomfield and Claremont.

One lucky visitor (14 or older) will win the chance to experience circus magic from a unique perspective — as a full-fledged, baggy-pants clown. Get made up by an actual Ringling Brothers clown, be outfitted in an authentic clown costume and make the audience roar with laughter, as you perform with Clown Alley during the All Access Preshow at the Prudential Center on Friday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. The lucky winner will also receive a family four-pack of tickets to that evening’s show. Other prizes include an original work of art by the “Pachyderm Picasso” of Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey and family four-packs of tickets to the Greatest Show on Earth.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. all weekend long, the museum’s garden and galleries will be transformed into a three-ringed extravaganza. Kids can learn to juggle, spin plates in the air, take a turn on a trapeze and even walk a tightrope as they learn the theories of balance, centrifugal force, motion and gravity. This is a very popular weekend, so if you’re going to go, you should get there early.

There will be Ringling Bros. clown shows at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., and magic shows at 12:30, 2:30 and 4:40 p.m. Admission to Circus Science, including either the
clown or magic show performance, is $10 for adults and $6 for seniors and children under 12. Tickets for additional performances may be purchased for $3 each. Members are admitted free of charge. All Museum workshops and exhibitions, including guided tours are free and open to the public. Tickets for programs and performances are provided on a first-come, first-served basis. The Verona-Glen Ridge Hockey Team will host its annual “Friends and Family Skate” at the Codey Arena on Sunday, February 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission is free to all Verona and Glen Ridge residents, and you can rent skates for just $3. Donations for VGR Hockey will be accepted at the event.

The contest rules are as follows:

* Writers must be Essex County residents who are 60 years of age or older.
* Entries should be original stories focusing on a special person, a life-altering experience or a significant period in your life.
* The suggested maximum length is 1,500 words.
* Stories must be typed or legibly hand-written on 8.5-by-11 inch paper.
* Entries must have a cover page with the author’s name, date of birth, address and telephone number.
* The story title with no identifying information should appear on the first page of the story text. All identifying information about the author is removed when stories are judged by the review committee.
* Seniors may submit only one entry.
* Previously published stories may not be submitted.
* Seniors should keep a copy of the story. Entries will not be returned.
* The deadline for entries is Monday, March 19, 2012. Late entries will not be accepted.

The hunt at those locations will continue on Tuesdays February 7, 14 and 21 and Thursdays February 9, 16 and 23. Ten hunters will be deployed at the Hilltop and former Essex County Hospital site, the largest group at any location because the county believes that the deer population remains so large there.

The Hilltop will be closed to hiking and recreation on hunt days, as will much of Eagle Rock (you can still get to the Highlawn Pavilion). Fairview Avenue will be shut from Durrell Street to Myrtle Avenue in Cedar Grove, so watch for detour signs.
