The dictionary lists more than 30 definitions for the word “kill”, several of which are about the use of the word in sports. Websters’ lexicographers might want to add one more definition, and put Eliza Sniatkowski’s picture next to it.
Co-captain of the Verona High School volleyball team, Sniatkowski has 54 kills to her credit this season. For those of you who don’t follow the game, a “kill” in volleyball is a point-scoring spike onto the opponent’s side of the court, usually delivered with considerable force (and a fair amount of bravado).
The 5’8 senior outside hitter is only in her second year on the VHS varsity volleyball team, having played at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School and on VHS’ JV squad. But she has been building her skills–in-season and during off-season play with the Allegro Volleyball Club–and she now leads the Hillbillies in kills, and has impressive stats in volleyball’s other key measures: digs, service points and aces. Her strong play least week propelled VHS to a perfect 4-0 week; in Tuesday action against a tough Newark Academy team, Sniatkowski had four digs, seven service points, two aces–and nine kills. For her efforts, Eliza Sniatkowski is this week’s Verona Sports Boosters Senior Athlete of the Week.
During the 2013-2014 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters recognized a different senior athlete at Verona High School every week. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
