At the end of the first quarter of last night’s game between the Verona High School Hillbillies and the Weequahic Indians, Verona was ahead, 9-7. But Weequahic would continue to pile on the points in the subsequent quarters and Verona didn’t, leading to a 21-9 Weequahic win.
Weequahic’s Charles Bruton got the Indians on the scoreboard first, on a 10-yard run in the first quarter. Verona’s Matt Aldiero and Nick Riggio then tag-teamed to run the ball downfield for the Hillbillies over a series of plays, which ended with Aldiero (above) in the end zone.
Verona’s next big move came minutes later, after the Hillbillies defense forced a turnover on downs. After a bad snap on the punt, Frank Riggio tackled the punter in the end zone for a safety.
Weequahic’s Tyler Phillips scored in the second quarter on a 60-yarder from Jerron Phillips and the Indians would get one more score, from Crosby McClinton, in the fourth.
Verona football’s record now stands at 3-2. The Hillbillies host Hoboken this coming Friday in another night game.
