The Essex County Penitentiary, which stood on the border of Verona and North Caldwell, was demolished in 2011.

Come on a virtual tour of Overbrook and the nearby Essex County Penitentiary with local historian Robert L. Williams and learn of the history of both fascinating places along with some of the ghost stories. Share your experiences and recollections of both, whether you were a former employee or someone who explored the vast ruins and extensive tunnel network in recent years.

Williams will display some of the salvaged relics and tell the story of a bygone era in local and national history.

Presented by the Verona Historical Society. The event will take place on Tuesday, October 2, at the Verona Community Center in the Fireman’s Room, 800 Bloomfield Ave., 7:30 p.m. For more information you can contact the society by email at [email protected].

The Essex County psychiatric hospital known as Overbrook was demolished over the last few years. More than 460 townhouses will be built on the Fairview Avenue property.
