After two weeks of competition, the Verona High School girls cross country team has accumulated a record of two wins and two losses in two dual meets. The wins were against Nutley and Newark Academy, and the losses were to Montclair Kimberley Academy and West Orange.
Junior Jenika Ying was first in her race in both meets. In the September 7 dual meet, she turned in a winning time of 22:37.8 and was followed closely to the finish line by sophomore Bridget O’Donnell in 22:38.8 (second place) and senior Julia DiGeronimo in 23:04.4 (sixth place). Freshman Annalie Ying is proving to be a strong addition to the varsity team, turning in a time of 24:38.9 in the September 7 meet, which was good enough for 10th place.
The boys cross country team is also on solid footing. In the September 7 meet, David Navarro finished fourth with a time of 18:22.7. Sean Carney was ninth overall with a time of 19:07.2 and Verona had wins over Bloomfield and Columbia in that meet, and a loss to West Orange.
In the September 12 meet, Navarro finished ninth with a time of 18:34.6 and senior Michael Maglione took 10th place in 18:36.3.
Jenika Ying again took first on the girls side in 21:23.8. O’Donnell was fifth with a time of 22:21.9 and DiGeronimo was 10th in 23:44.3.
The teams will be racing again in Branch Brook Park on Thursday, September 20.
