On Sunday, August 26, wrestlers from across the region convened in Paramus for the Supreme Summer Sizzler tournament, and three Verona wrestlers came away with medals.

Verona High School senior Michael Garcia, who trains with the Cordoba Trained club team, took first place, fellow senior Cade Byrne took second place, and sophomore Dean Palmer took third. Incoming freshman Derek Bernardino also participated in the event, which closed out the summer off-season workouts and Antonio Cuffari, a Cedar Grove High School sophomore who is part of Cordoba Trained, also captured a third place finish.

“It was a great opportunity and experience for everyone involved and a great way to close out the summer season,” said Garcia, who finished with a 3-0 individual record in the 109-pound weight class. “Some of the best wrestlers in the tristate area participate in this tournament every year. We all got a lot of work in and the experience will only help us this coming season.”
