Marita ShatzelMrs. Marita M. (nee Murray) Shatzel, 75, died on May 12, 2018 in Roxbury Township surrounded by her loving family. Visiting will be in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Ave., Verona on Wednesday, May 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral mass will be offered in Our Lady of the Lake Church, Lakeside Avenue, Verona on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.

Born in New York City, she was a resident of Caldwell, Cedar Grove and Verona before moving to Mt. Arlington in 2017.
She was a 1962 graduate of Mount Saint Dominic Academy and attended Caldwell College.

Mrs. Shatzel was a fifth grade school teacher in Paramus, then served as assistant tax collector for the Township of Cedar Grove, and tax collector for the Township of Fairfield for 24 years and the Borough of Essex Fells for six years before retiring.

Mrs. Shatzel was a member of the NJ Tax Collectors & Treasurers Association, holding the office of secretary. She was also a certified counselor for the Domestic Violence Response Team, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Verona Fire Department and a CCD Teacher for OLL parish.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, David J. Shatzel; loving children, Stephen J. Shatzel and his wife, Tracy, Eileen S. Richards and her husband, Kevin, and Brian D. Shatzel; and cherished grandchildren, Victoria E. Richards, Katlyn E. Shatzel, Kiley M. Shatzel, Madelyn G. Richards and Abigail E. Shatzel. She is also survived by her brothers, Dennis (Conni) and William (Lynn) Murray.
