Desiree Meyer led the Verona High School girls basketball team to an upset 41-30 victory over Nutley in the first round of the Essex County Tournament.
While Meyers had used three-pointers to power Verona past Caldwell earlier in the week, she only had one among the 13 points she scored against Nutley. Cecilia “CC” Courter was right behind Meyer with 12 points and four rebounds. Cayla Okafor once again led Verona in rebounds, with six.
The first round’s other upset saw No. 10 West Essex edge out No. 7 Bloomfield Tech 51-49, and No. 23 Newark Central put up a huge fight against No. 6 Arts, losing that game by just one point.
The rest of the ECT match-ups played out pretty much as expected, with No. 2 seed Newark Tech demolishing No. 15 Glen Ridge 74-21, No. 3 West Orange defeated No. 14 Caldwell 47-30, No. 4 East Orange beating No. 13 Newark Collegiate 55-41, No. 5 Montclair Immaculate romping over No. 12 Columbia 63-36 and No. 1 University overpowered No. 17 Bloomfield 61-22. Verona will play University in Newark next Saturday, February 17.
