Varsity Wrestlers Vanquish West Essex

It was pins, pins and more pins as the Verona High School wrestling team defeated West Essex 40-33 last night.

There was a pin from Michael Garcia, wrestling at 106, over Jack Ruane in 2:32, and another from Frank Riggio (132) over Mike Ruane in 4:45. Frank and John Gabriele both did the usual, with Frank Gabriele (138) pinning Joseph Nappi in 2:39 and brother John pinning Dorian Gashi in 3:50. And Verona’s heavyweight, Cade Byrne (220) put Ricky Behar on his back in 5:28. (Frank Gabriele broke VHS wrestling’s all-time wins record last month, while John Gabriele joined the 100 wins cluib.)

There were also several big decisions. Dean Palmer (120) got a 4-0 win over Billy Garofalo. Bill Fauerbach (182) got a 9-0 major decision over Vasili Tsilionis. The 4-2 win by Nick Riggio over Luke Dignazio sealed the night for Verona.

Verona wrestling now has a 10-7 record overall and is 4-3 in conference.
