It’s not too cold to think about the next season of competitive mountain biking. The Essex Offroad Mountain Bike Team will hold an orientation session tonight, Friday, November 17, for middle school and high school boys and girls who think they might be interested in the sport. The meeting will be held at the Cedar Grove Fire Department’s South End Engine #3 building at 148 Pompton Avenue (at the intersection of Ridge Road) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Come in the driveway and park in back of the building.
In its first season in 2017, the Essex Offroad Mountain Bike Team won third place in the New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League. In addition to having Verona riders from both HBW and VHS, the Essex Offroad team includes students from Bloomfield, Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Maplewood, Montclair, South Orange, and West Caldwell. The team, which operates under the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), was formed in the fall of 2016 and started training over the winter, often around the West Essesx hiking and biking trail. Races are held across northern New Jersey.
