It was the night of long yardage for Verona. Tom Sharkey had 115 yards in the air and 100 on the ground as the Verona High School football team defeated Hopatcong High School 44-28 in Hopatcong.
Sharkey, a junior who took over the quarterback duties for Verona mid-season, wasn’t alone in the triple digits. Nick Riggio compiled 110 yards over six carries as he contributed two touchdowns to Verona’s win.
The game was scoreless throughout the first quarter as each team took measure of the other. But Verona turned on the jets in the second quarter, with Riggio going 53 yards for the first touchdown before Sharkey did his own 50-yard dash to the goalposts.
Hopatcong’s Anthony Mastroeni would eventually run up a hat trick of TDs, but it wasn’t enough to get a win for the Chiefs because Verona kept piling up the points. Robert Coppola, a senior, grabbed his first of two touchdowns on a short slant before hauling in 44-yard pass from Sharkey. CJ Lavery also had a touchdown before Riggio sealed the deal with a 36 yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Kicker Steven Luehs made four of his five extra point attempts. The win moved Verona to 5-4 on the season.
