Brenda Herman ran for Team Sandy Hook Promise in the 2016 New York City Marathon.

Verona resident Brenda Herman will again be running the TCS New York City Marathon on behalf of Sandy Hook Promise, the group formed in the wake of the 2012 massacre of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school. Its mission is to prevent gun-related deaths due to crime, suicide and accidental discharge.

Herman is one of two returning runners from the 2016 NYC Marathon Team and says she “couldn’t be more excited to rally the fans on the streets of NYC for Sandy Hook Promise once again.”

The marathon is a little more than one month away–Sunday, November 5, and Herman says her training has not been as easy this season. “Some runs have tested more of my mental endurance than just physical, which can be far more challenging,” she says. “This will be my third marathon in 365 days, and my body keeps reminding me I’ll be ‘halfway to 90’ shortly after this event.”

Herman’s fundraising goal this year is $4,000 and she’s more than halfway there already. If you want to support her, here’s her fundraising page.

“Similarly to last year, this won’t be for any time goal,” Herman says. “New York, as I learned, has roads that can torture runners. They are beat up and frankly, there are a lot more hills and long, steady, relentless inclines than you think. Finishing and fundraising for Sandy Hook Promise are the rewards that will far exceed any time accomplishment.”
