Lara Tole led the scoring for Verona on Monday.

The Verona High School girls soccer team found its momentum in a big way yesterday, scorching the turf at VHS with a 9-1 win over Newark’s Science Park High School.

The Lady Hillbillies got to the net first thanks to junior Lara Tole, almost before the opening whistle had faded. Science answered back on a penalty kick, but that was all it managed to put on the scoreboard all afternoon.

Gabi Montagna was one of two sophomores to score for Verona.

Tole would go on to add two more goals to her tally, while sophomores Gabi Montagna and Rebecca Siclari, and junior Ally Madigan added one apiece. The icing on the cake came in the form of two second-half goals by junior Sarah Carlucci, who finished the game with three goals to her credit. Sara Cole, Maddie Gallagher, Colleen Whelan, Julia Mackey and Chloe Mathewson were all credited with assists.

The win puts the team at 1-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference. The girls will take on Caldwell at Caldwell on Wednesday afternoon, with a 4 p.m. start.
