Last weekend, sophomore Kate Ashley became the second Verona High School girl to win the Girls State Group 1 800-meter race at the NJSIAA State Championships, in “one of the most exciting races of the entire week-end,” says Coach Gene Leporati. The first VHS student to accomplish that was none other than her older sister, Julia Ashley, who was also a sophomore when she won it.

Kate Ashley also placed in the 400-meter race on Friday, which booked her a spot in the Meet of Champions on Saturday, June 10 at Northern Burlington High School. It will be her last race of this season.

12 other VHS athletes competed at the NJSIAA State Championships, including:

Cullen Pelfree – 400m Hurdles
Brianna Rigney, Julia DiGeronimo, Karishma Parekh and Kathleen Nagy – 4 x 800m relay
Zoie Petronzo, Francesca Valle, Olivia Fiore and Kate Ashley – 4 x 100m relay
Olivia Fiore, Brianna Rigney, Kathleen Nagy and Kate Ashley – 4 x 400m relay
Carly Waterman – Shot put
