The Verona High School boys baseball team celebrated Senior Day yesterday playing Newark Academy, as they said farewell to their high school baseball careers.

Members of the class of 2017 fought to stay in the game for the home crowd against the private school but came up short, losing 8-1. Their opponent’s strong offense could not be broken by Verona.

Before the game, all eight seniors celebrated their departure and revealed their post high school plans. The only senior continuing a baseball career will be Collin Kiernan, at Rutgers University in the fall. Kiernan has been playing for 14 years in Verona and says he will miss walking on the field and playing in front of his hometown. He also says he’ll miss playing with his friends most, as he’s been playing with them since kindergarten.

“It was a sad day…playing on such a nice field for the last time,” Kiernan said, speaking for all of the seniors. “We look forward to the state tournament and making a great run.”

Verona’s next game is today against Livingston and their first-round state game is on Monday.
