register to voteThere’s a Town Council election on Tuesday, May 9, and to be able to vote in it you’ve got to be registered by Tuesday, April 18. Now is also the time to request a mail-in ballot if you don’t think you’ll be able to get to the polls that day.

REGISTER TO VOTE: To register to vote in New Jersey you must be a U.S. citizen who is at least 18 years old by the next election, which is May 9. You also must have been a resident of your current county (Essex County for Verona voters) for 30 days before the election.

You can pick up a voter registration form from Town Hall, the Essex County Clerk, a Department of Motor Vehicles office or just download it here. Fill it in and send it back to P.O. Box 690, Newark, NJ 07101-0690. The Voter Registration Form can also be used for name and address changes.

VOTE BY MAIL: Thanks to a change in voting laws, you don’t have to be out of town on election day to request a mail-in ballot. You can qualify even if your school, work or extra activities will make it hard for you to get to your regular polling place.

You can pick up a form to request a mail-in ballot at Town Hall or simply download this form from the Essex County Clerk‘s office. Send it back to them, and they will send you a mail-in ballot for the election. You must make the request no later than seven days before an election, or May 2 for the May 9 Town Council election. But why wait? Download the form now, get your vote in, and get on with your busy schedule. You can even use the form to request that all future ballots be sent to you by mail.
