Cianna Winkler, a Verona High School junior, was one of 23 students honored on Saturday, March 11 by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for their fundraising efforts. The students had raised more than $203,000 for LLS in just eight weeks.
Winkler received one of LLS’s three Citizenship awards and a scholarship for volunteerism. She was honored for setting up a repeatable fundraising program at VHS by gaining permission from the school board and her principal. She then pulled together VHS students to raise funds through LLS pinup donations, close to $1,000 raised in all from the high school. Winkler also received outside donations from individuals and PSE&G, lifting her total raised to more than $8,000, just shy of her $10,000 goal.
Having taken on a variety of community service initiatives over the years, Winkler says raised money for LLS to honor everyone who has battled cancers, like her grandmother and grandfather, and to raise money that will go directly to LLS in support of its longstanding mission to find a cure and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
