The Verona Hillbillies blew out yet another state tournament opponent on Saturday evening in their sectional semifinal game against Bogota. The Hillbillies beat Bogota 73-46 in front of a sellout crowd in the Verona High School gym. In their past three state games, Verona has outscored their opponents by 105 points, scoring 222 in those games.
Bogota kept the deficit at a reasonable number after the first half, only down 41-30, but the third quarter was when Verona buried them. The Hillbillies scored 25 points on 10 field goals and 3 made foul shots while holding Bogota to only 8 points.
Zack Zaccone was on fire all night, leading the Hillbillies with 25 points. Travis Jocelyn had a big game as well, scoring 19 and Joe Zecchino added 12. Verona, the #1 seed, will play the #2 seed Cresskill Cougars for the North 1, Group 1 title on Monday at 7 p.m. The game will be played at VHS. It is recommended that all fans get to the game early on Monday because they are expecting another sell out.
The winner of that game will play in the Group 1 semifinals against either Glen Ridge or University. Verona lost to University in the Group 1 semis in 2016.
