Candles4Mr. John C. McMurtrie, 85, died on Sunday, February 27, 2017 in Cedar Grove. Visiting will be in the Prout Funeral Home, 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Friday, March 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. A service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Born and raised in Montclair, Mr. McMurtrie moved to Verona in 1958.

He retired after 39 years with Operating Engineers Local 68 of West Caldwell, primarily working at Overbrook Hospital Center in Cedar Grove. Mr. McMurtrie was a member of the Verona Volunteer Fire Department Co. #1, having served for 60 years.

He was the beloved husband of Diane (nee Grodowsky) McMurtrie and the loving father of John David McMurtrie (MaryEllen) and Lynn McMurtrie English (Patrick). He is also survived by his sister, Jean McCarthy and brother, Robert McMurtrie (Nancy) and his cherished grandchildren, Lauren English, Andrew English, Alyson McMurtrie and Patrick McMurtrie.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Verona Volunteer Fire Department, 880 Bloomfield Ave., Verona, NJ 07044 would be appreciated.
