Fourteen-year-old Verona resident Nina Machnowski competed in the 10th Annual Hampshire 100 endurance mountain bike race on Sunday, August 21.
Machnowski races for Team Pedal Montclair and finished in third place in the 50K Sport Women class. Her total time was 3 hours 58 minutes. The event is part of the National Ultra Endurance Series (NUE).
The endurance course starts in Oak Park in Greenfield, N.H., and winds through the beautiful terrain of southern New Hampshire. The course featured a 33-mile lap with approximately 3,900 feet of ascent and a combination of dirt and gravel forest trails. Cyclists had to ride to the crest of a ski resort and through several back-country forests.
Among the notable new trails was Big Rock Trail, approximately 1.5 miles of mostly downhill, with one of those giant New Hampshire boulders dead center that is bridged on both sides, making for a great ride over.
The 10th edition of the event offered a 100-mile, a 100-kilometer, and a 50-kilometer option. Participants had access to aid stations with food and fluids, SAG wagon support, complimentary campsite at the start/finish venue and festivities.
