PrisonersPondSustainable Verona, a group that assists Verona in winning grants for environmental programs, is calling for volunteers to join it on Saturday, April 16, to clean up the area in the Hilltop Reservation known as Prisoners Pond. (Essex County built a jail on Verona’s western ridge in 1872 and operated it until 2004. All of the buildings at the site were demolished in 2011.)

The clean-up, which is open to people age 13 and older, is part of New Jersey Clean Communities‘ Clean Water Challenge & Earth Day. Prisoner’s Pond is the area located behind the new fields at the Verona Community Center, 880 Bloomfield Avenue. Sustainable Verona is asking for volunteers to meet at 8:45 a.m. in the VCC parking lot and walk up to the location.

Please wear long pants, long sleeves, work boots and bring your own water. Other supplies like gloves & bags will be supplied for you. To participate please contact Steven Neale at [email protected].
