AOW-Matta1The Verona Sports Boosters would like to congratulate Charlie Matta as the Boys Senior Athlete of the Week.

Matta is one of the captains on the Verona High School boys basketball team, which currently has a record of 9-9 and is preparing for the first round of the state playoffs. On the season, Charlie is averaging six points, three rebounds and one assist per game. His production has been increasing with the season, and over the last two weeks of January he averaged nine points, five rebounds and three assists per game.

Matta lists his best VHS basketball memory as an impromptu dunk contest that occurred last year during a Saturday morning practice. He remembers his teammates doing amazing dunks and inspiring him. He jumped so high and dunked so hard that his coach asked him if he had broken his wrist! It was his Lebron James/Blake Griffin moment.

When not playing basketball, Matta loves to eat pizza, watch the TV show “The Big Bang Theory”, and listen to J Cole or Hoodie Allen. He is a HUGE Boston Celtics fan as he grew up watching their games with his father.AOW-Matta2

Matta names Tom White, his honors English teacher, as the best he’s had at VHS. He also says that his VHS basketball coach, Eric McElroy and his AAU coach Jerome Miller have both been huge influences in his life. He credits them with not only making him a better ballplayer, but a better person as well.

If Matta could have dinner with anyone in the world, it would be Will Smith. The best vacation he ever took was a trip to Australia for a month when he was nine.

Next year Matta plans on attending college somewhere in the New England area and majoring in finance. He would love to end up in Boston, as it is his favorite city in the world.

The Verona Sports Boosters hopes Charlie is able to achieve all of his dreams.During the 2014-2015 school year, the Verona Sports Boosters will recognize a different male and female senior athlete at Verona High School. The Boosters support male and female athletes in all VHS sports through a variety of fundraisers and recognition events.
