Verona High School football players were working on something other than offense and defense on Sunday. That day, they were volunteering as baggers at Kings to seek donations to tackle Progeria, the rapid-aging disease that affects Verona’s Zoey Penny.
The boys earned $1,098 for Team Zoey, the non-profit that collects donations for the Progeria Research Foundation. PRF’s many fundraisers have led to the first-ever clinical drug trial related to Progeria and a heightened awareness of the disease’s impact. (Team Zoey is holding its annual “Miles of Hope Turkey Trot” 5K and fun run in Verona Park on on Saturday, November 29.) Freshman football players had the leading stats of the day, raising $409 of the $1,098 total.
Zoey Penny will be the guest of honor for the Thanksgiving Day game, handling the pre-game coin toss.
