Verona High School boys soccer team fell to Whippany Park 4-0 on Friday, ending what had been a winning week on a down note.
On October 14, the boys edged out Technology High School with a 3-2 victory and piled up a 6-0 score over Newark’s Christ The King the following day. That game was a romp for Verona in more ways than one, with five different players getting on the scoreboard, including two goals for Mario Catania. Ellis Martin increased his 2014 season goals to eight after scoring against both Christ the King and Technology.
The Whippany Park loss puts Verona’s record at 9-8, putting the Hillbillies at the bottom of North Jersey Section 1, Group 1. We’re the No. 12 seed in the 2014 Essex County boys soccer tournament, which kicks off today. The first game for VHS, which has been battling its way back from injuries, will be against East Orange, which defeated Science Park 3-0 in the play-in round.
The Verona High School girls soccer team meanwhile improved its record to 10-5 in the last week. It defeated Science Park 4-2 on October 10, and beat Caldwell 2-1 five days later. The Hillbillies then went toe-to-toe with Newark Academy on Friday, but came up one goal short. The girls are currently ranked eighth in the Super Essex Conference. Senior Julia Tole has been white hot this season, leading the team with 10 goals.
