Girls Tennis Sweeps Secaucus

The Verona High School girls tennis team continued its march through state sectionals with a 5-0 sweep of Secaucus High School yesterday afternoon. It had defeated Weequahic High School by a similar score last week in the first round of the NJSIAA North 2 Group 1 tournament.

At first singles, Dasha Yahknis defeated Nicole Saberon 6-1, 6-1, while second singles Nell Karpinski topped Ashlee Bayon 6-4, 6-3. Rounding out Verona’s singles powerhouse, Caroline Chivily beat Adriana Sakatos 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, the team of Gabby Brehne/Allie Vaccaro went 6-0, 6-0, while Lexi Duhaney/Michelle Lima were 6-1, 6-0. Secaucus was the number 5 seed going into sectionals, to Verona’s number 4.

The next round will be determined by today’s game between number 1-ranked McNair and number 8 Dayton. Verona will face the winner on Friday.
