The Verona High School girls soccer team improved its record to 4-3 with back-to-back wins this week, while the boys soccer team moved to 5-2 after a loss and a win.
On Tuesday, the girls pulled off a 2-1 victory in overtime over a major rival, Mount Saint Dominic Academy. Jackie Brozyna and Emilia Frizzi led the offense with a goal apiece while Diana Flores pulled an iron curtain over the goal and blocked 15 shots by the Mount.
The margin of victory was even bigger on Wednesday, when the lady Hillbillies traveled to Cedar Grove High School.
Brozyna and Julia Tole paired up for the 4-1 win, with Tole toting up two goals and two assists and Brozyna banking two goals and one assist.
The VHS girls were supposed to face West Orange at home tomorrow, but that game has been pushed into October. They travel to Van Brunt field on Monday to play Montclair Kimberly Academy.
The boys soccer team started off the week on a down note, with a narrow 4-3 loss to Livingston. Will Mulderry and Ellis Martin scored early for Verona, but Livingston held a 4-2 lead as the game neared the end. But Mulderry, a senior who is only in his second year of varsity soccer, teamed with Anders Kolind to take that lead down a notch.
Mulderry was again a scoring factor when VHS took on Newark Tech on Centennial Field. He was joined by Jhonatan Mejia and Chris Yeates in the 3-2 win, with Kolind getting credit for an assist. Christian Alfano was in goal for Verona and had 10 saves.
The boys play Cedar Grove at Centennial in a Friday night game, with a 7 p.m. start.
