Dog’s Best Friend, a Verona-based dog training and walking company, will start a therapy dog training class on Saturday, September 27.
Having a certified therapy dog allows you to take your dog into facilities such as hospitals and group homes, under the auspices of Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one hour of therapy visits, which can be done at a facility of your choice.
The course is designed to teach the handler and dog how to behave in the community and around mobility equipment, such as a walker, wheelchair, crutches or cane. Dogs are exposed to people and crowds of all ages as well as other dogs who are working. Dog’s Best Friend has had more than 15 people and 19 dogs take its class, with a 100% pass rate.
There will be five one-hours classes for the course, which will be held in Verona Park, weather permitting. The class is $300. If a person registers two dogs, two “of age” handlers are required, and the price for the second dog is $200.
