Since Saturday’s win for the Hillbilly football team, it’s been a bit downhill for Verona High School sports.
VHS rolled over Newark’s East Side High School on Saturday, posting a 48-16 win on scoring by C.J. Lavery, Frank Ferrari, Bill Ferrari, Matt Intili, Mark Riggio, Jimmy Crawford and Anthony Giuliano.
But on Monday, the boys soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Bloomfield High School. VHS senior Ellis Martin scored the lone Verona goal, while Philip Olla, Franco Osco and Gabe Crespo got on the board for Bloomfield. Hillbilly soccer is 2-1 heading into this afternoon’s match-up at Montclair Kimberley Academy.
VHS girls soccer notched up another loss on Monday, a 2-0 defeat by Columbia High School. The Verona girls record now stands at 1-3 as they look ahead to hosting Newark Academy on Centennial Field on Saturday.
VHS volleyball also had a setback. Despite another strong outing by senior Alex Luehs, the Verona squad lost to MKA in two sets to one on Monday. Their record is now 4-3, with a key match against Caldwell in Caldwell on Friday.
Meanwhile, the Verona girls tennis team soundly defeated Hasbrouck Heights on Monday, posting a 5-0 score. Freshman Dasha Yahknis trounced Erica Nilsson 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, while second singles Nell Karpinski served up a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alisha Nanda. The Verona girls are on court now against West Orange after yesterday morning’s rain forced a rescheduling of the first round of the Essex County Tournament in Newark.
