HBW Track Closes For Resurfacing

HBW-TrackIf you jog on the track behind H.B. Whitehorne, you’re going to have to find another place to run for a while.

The track is going to be closed to the public as of Wednesday, September 10 (tomorrow) for about seven days while its new surface is being applied. The HBW infield will also be closed to all school and recreational use, but the outdoor basketball court will be open.

The track, which was built in 2001 in partnership with Montclair Kimberley Academy, was closed from December 2012 until the spring of 2013 because part of its surface had separated from the underlying material. The Board of Education made temporary repairs to last while it negotiated with MKA and Verona’s municipal government on funding the resurfacing. (The town was approached because many recreation programs use the school facilities and many residents get their exercise there.) The BOE installed a new drainage system near the track earlier this summer, which should help control the runoff that may have caused the track to deteriorate.

The BOE and MKA will split the cost of the resurfacing. While the town had initially indicated it would support the work, it backed off that support after the referendum passed.
