If you wanted a nail-biter, you couldn’t have done better than Monday’s match-up between the Verona High School and Glen Ridge soccer teams.
Playing the opening game of the 2014-2015 season on foreign turf (Watsessing Field), the Hillbilly squad went toe for toe with the Ridgers. A score by sophomore Jack Farrell made the game a 1-1 lock and sent play into the first of two overtimes, where Ellis Martin made sure that Verona went home with the win.
Martin, who led the Verona runners in UNICO’s Labor Day 5K race, sent a free kick where it needed to go, giving Verona a 2-1 win. Verona travels to Irvington on Thursday.
The scene was much different at Centennial Field, where the VHS girls were facing Montclair Kimberley Academy. The game was all MKA, on offense and defense. Olivia Vaughn and Samantha Pai led the scoring for MKA with two goals apiece.
The Verona girls host Nutley at home on Wednesday.
