The Verona High School girls track & field team won the SEC Independence Conference Track & Field Championship on Friday at Newark Schools Stadium by a wide margin.
Verona finished with a team score of 139.5, ahead of Weequahic (124), Shabazz (68.5), University (50), Science Park (41), Montclair Kimberley Academy (30), Orange (27), Glen Ridge (7) and Technology (1). The championship pitted the county’s smaller schools against each other.
“It was truly an exciting meet with the lead changing back and forth against a very strong and defending champion Weequahic team,” says Coach Gene Leporati. “Most of the girls had their personal best performances which proved to be the major ingredient for our success.”
