Freshman Dana Pena showed solid stick control
There is a first for everything, even in lacrosse. The Verona High School girls lacrosse team decisively defeated Columbia High School 15-6 on Friday, and in so doing scored the first victory by a VHS girls varsity lacrosse team over the Maplewood squad.

The Lady Hillbillies played solidly on offense and defense, ruling Centennial Field from the opening draw. Gabi Mottola, Jackie Brozyna and Lauren Ednie scored three goals apiece in Verona’s 15-6 victory. In one of her first-half scores, Ednie cut through the traffic in the center of field like a New York cabbie in rush hour. You can watch the video on MyVeronaNJ.com’s YouTube page.

The triple triples where complemented by two goals from junior Nicola Perzichilli, while Emilia Frizzi, Cole McConnachie, Lizzy Scandiffio and freshman Dan Pena rounded out the effort with one goal apiece. The afternoon’s effort brought the VHS teams’s record to 5-2 in North Jersey Group 1 play. The girls take on Pequannock on Wednesday.

In other Friday afternoon action, VHS softball defeated Belleville 6-1. The away game saw Sam Bass throw a one-hitter with four strikeouts, while Olivia Feiger tripled and sent two runners home. Paige Ferrell and Olivia Haveron were each 2-for-4 on the afternoon. Ferrell also had an RBI to her credit.
