The Verona High School boys basketball team took on Pompton Lakes in the second round of the NJSIAA North 1 Group 1 tournament and came away with a 39-31 victory before large, loud home crowd.

Alex Kaslander and his cousin, Frank Ferrari, each had 11 points in the effort, though Ferrari’s included a spectacular dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. Verona dominated in the paint with 22 rebounds and Verona’s play pretty much shut down Adam and Drew Rayford, the Pompton Lakes siblings who had both scored against Verona when their football team defeated VHS 47-7 back in November.

On Friday night at home at VHS, Verona will face number 3 seed Cedar Grove, which defeated Wood-Ridge in a high-scoring game on Wednesday night. Verona beat the Panthers in the December holiday tournament 40-21, but Cedar Grove’s lead player, David Njoku was not on the court that night. Njoku was in the game against Wood-Ridge, and was the high scorer with 23 points. In the other Friday night semifinal, top-ranked Cresskill will face New Milford.
