The Verona High School girls basketball team easily defeated Waldwick High School in the opening round of the North 1 Group 1 NJSIAA Tournament.
Playing at home, Verona–the number 2 seed coming into the state tournament–rolled up a 58-29 victory over Waldwick, which was the number 15 seed. Caroline Kirnan was the top scorer for the Hillbillies, putting up 15 points on the evening.
Sarah O’Neil did a stellar job of directing plays on the court and sinking some long shots to contribute 13 points to the victory. Brielle Cummings led the Verona squad in steals, with five.
Verona gets right back on the court Wednesday night. In a 5 p.m. game at home, the girls will take on number 10 seed Emerson Boro, which scored a 1-point upset over seventh-seeded Cresskill yesterday. All of the other top seeds advanced as expected. Round 3 of the NJSIAA tournament will be Friday, with the finals next Tuesday, March 11.
