On Tuesday, November 5, Verona voters will have the chance to fill two of the five seats on the Board of Education.
There are four candidates for the two three-year terms, two incumbents (Glenn Elliott and Michael Unis) and two challengers (Jim Day and Judy DiNapoli). MyVeronaNJ.com will be profiling all four candidates, and will post those profiles here as they are completed.
Verona’s Board of Education has had to grapple with many challenges in the last few years, and the issues that lie ahead will be no less demanding. Its budget increases have been capped by state legislation, even as the state continues to add mandates to the curriculum in Verona schools. In spring 2015, Verona will need to administer a new state standardized test, the PARCC, that can only by taken by computer. It could cost Verona as much as $500,000 to get ready for that test alone.
The BOE also must find funding for critically needed repairs to its facilities. Landfill problems have rendered the upper field at Verona High School unplayable, the school’s heating system fails and virtually every door on every one of Verona’s six schools needs replacement. We’ve gathered some of the issues around the referendum in this story.
Verona, like many school districts across the state and the country, must do more with less. To read more of our coverage on the issues facing the BOE, see our archives.
