Melanie Egan, an incoming senior at Verona High School and a leader of its girls track and cross country teams, was the first woman finisher in the 31st annual UNICO Labor Day 5K. Egan completed the course in 19:20.13. Matt Carroll, also a track team member of the Class of 2014, was the top Verona finisher among the men. Carroll placed tenth with a time of 18:54.37.
This year’s race was won by Ben Clarke of Morristown, with a time of 16:41.23, a 5:22 pace. According to race organizers, more than 750 runners registered for the 5K and the 1-mile fun run that preceded it.
Samantha Rizzi, age 8, was the youngest female runner from Verona, with a time of 33:37.61. Andrew Hunt and Graham Weber, both 10-year-olds from Verona, were the youngest male runners and finished within seconds of each other at 27:42.40 and 27:43.44 respectively. The oldest Verona runner was George McIntyre, age 70, who turned in a 28:16.35 time. You can see the top 25 male and female runners from Verona here and the full race results here.
One more runner of note: Carol Lynn Moy crossed the finish line in 33:49.39 to the cheers of her students at H.B. Whitehorne Middle School.
