Hillwood Terrace, a rental complex that is home to many Verona senior citizens, is accepting applications for its waiting list.
Hillwood is a so-called Section 8 building, which means that it is open only to people with low incomes. Many people call Hillwood Verona’s senior housing because it accepts applications from people with limited means who are age 62 or older.
But Hillwood is not an assisted living center or nursing home and it must, by law also accept applications from people who are disabled. To get on the waiting list, the applicant’s income must not exceed $45,100 for a single person or $51,550 for a couple.
When an opening occurs at Hillwood, there will be a lottery from the pool of applicants to fill it. The wait for an opening can be long.
If chosen, the person’s rent would be 30% of their income (the rest of the cost is subsidized by the federal government). Hillwood has both studio and one-bedroom apartments. Heat and hot water are included in the monthly rent. There is a community room and a laundry on site. The Verona Senior Citizens Bus makes regular stops at Hillwood.
To get an application, you must go to the management office at 100 Hillwood Terrace, which is just opposite Verona High School off Fairview Avenue. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Applications must be returned or postmarked no later than Monday, August 19.
