It started as an even match-up but quickly turned into a rout: The Verona High School boys lacrosse team roared away from a 2-2 first period to defeat the North Brunswick High School Raiders 17-5.
Senior Mike Perri led the scoring for VHS with six goals and an assist. Matt Thompson and Mike Conroy contributed four and three, respectively to the afternoon’s tally, while Walt Brandt led Verona in ground balls, with eight.
Many of the teams’s younger players saw action in the game, including freshman Brian Valentine and Chris Yeates, who was credited with 2 assists and six ground balls.
The boys, who are 5 and 5 on the season, travel over the hill to West Essex High School on Saturday to face the 3-7 Knights in an early morning game.
In other Thursday sports action, the baseball team bested Boonton High School on its home turf, 12-10. Junior Mike Coppola was again a standout for Verona, going four-for-four with three runs and two RBIs. The Hillbillies are back in action on Monday, when they travel to Newark Academy.
