The Verona Recreation Department has lined up 20 different programs for children this spring, including a new hiking program. Online and in-person registration will begin at 9 a.m. on Monday March 4.

The Hilltop Reservation has developed some great hiking trails with varying difficulty and the Recreation Department is seeking to take advantage of this exceptional outdoor space. Two new hiking programs, L’il Hikers and Hilltop Hiking, have been created to target children looking to get involved with outdoor activities. Both hiking programs will be held on Thursday afternoons for six weeks at a cost of $30 per child.

L’il Hikers: The L’il Hikers program created for children ages four to six along with a caregiver will provide young children a nice introduction to the basics of hiking and the outdoors. The trails traveled are designed to be safe and easy for younger kids. All hiking programs will be led by a properly prepared guide.

Hilltop Hiking: The Hilltop Hiking program is geared towards older children in grades seven and eight. The level of difficulty will vary from week to week as different trails are explored. This class will be held rain or shine and offers a great opportunity to get outdoors and really explore the new trail system.

There are many other program to choose from. Among the options are:

Junior and Senior Soccer Squirts: Fridays at 1:30 p.m. for the Junior Squirts or 3:30pm for the Senior Squirts. Junior Squirts includes children ages 3-5 and Senior Squirts is for children 5-7. The cost of the six-week program is $60.

Tennis: There is a tennis program available for children in 1st grade all the way up to 8th grade. These programs are broken up by grade and are held on different days. On the other hand, Tennis Tots is for younger children ages four and five. All of these programs run for six weeks at a cost of $65.

Track: The track program is one of the most popular and includes events like long jump, turbo javelin, 100-1600 meter dashes and the 4×100 relay. This program meets on Mondays and Thursdays and concludes with dual track meets. Children in grades K-3 meet from 5:45-6:30 p.m. while the participants in grades 4-8 meet from 6-7 p.m. This extensive program runs at a cost of $40 per child.

These programs are just a piece of a remarkable spring schedule. There are still numerous youth programs available and plenty of options for Verona’s adult and senior population including, basketball, adult and senior exercise classes, zumba, yoga, cooking, tennis and walking. Also, keep an eye out for the addition of Adult Sunset Hikes all summer long.
