Frankie Greco may have missed a few weeks of wrestling due to a hand injury, but he certainly hasn’t missed a beat: Greco, sporting newly bleached hair, came away from the NJSIAA Districts for District 13 with a first-place finish after two pins and a 5-2 decision over Roberto LoCasio of West Essex in the final. The win at West Essex High School guarantees Greco a berth in the regions championship that starts on Friday.
Joe Cordasco, at 170, won his first two matches, but took second place after a rare defeat by Christopher Morgan of West Orange. Paul Scully, at 126 pounds, took third after scoring a 9-0 decision over Tom Nealis of Cedar Grove. Nick Esposito also made it to the semifinals, before falling to Mario Pitch of Caldwell 10-6. Verona finished in sixth place overall, with 76 points for the team.
On Wednesday night at 6 p.m., Cordasco and Scully go to West Orange High School, where they will square off against the second and third place finishers from other districts in hopes of advancing to regions as well. The regions championship will also be held at West Orange, on Friday, with a 6 p.m. start.
