On Sunday September 30, the police and fire departments of Verona and Cedar Grove took to the baseball diamond behind the Verona Community Center for the first, but certainly not the last, “Battle of the Badges”– a charity softball tournament to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The teams got to honor U.S. Army Specialist Derek T. McConnell, who was severely wounded in Afghanistan in July 2011, and awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery in combat .
The Verona Police triumphed over the Cedar Grove Police 12 to 9 in the championship game, but the better story is that the event raised $3,710 for the charity, which aids injured servicemen and women. DJ Chris Segarra, a Verona native who runs Legendery Entertainment donated his time, and Two Guys Tees, a police-owned business in Verona, sold commemorative tee shirts and then donated all of their proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project. The game shot is today’s “Verona View”.
