Wins For Track As Lacrosse Falls

The Verona High School girls’ track & field team had a very successful day on Friday, setting three new school records at the Essex County Track & Field Relay Championships.

In the 4x1600m, a team of Heather Sweeney, Melanie Egan, Amanda Flores and Julia Ashley took first place in 21.51, which is a new school record. Anchor leg Ashley, a freshman, ran a blistering 5:06 in a thrilling finish. The 3x400m hurdle team of Erin Smythe, Marybeth Grund and Sarah Conboy took fourth with a 3:28.8 performance and the shuttle hurdle team of Smythe, Grund and Laura Williams placed fifth in 1:08. Another school record was set in the 4x200m relay when Colleen Farrell, Jordan Seubert, Smyth and Ashley ran a 1:50. Ashley had an impressive 200M split of 25.6.

In the field events, Williams and Farrell placed fourth in the long-jump with a new school record performance of 31′ 1 1/2″. The discus team of Kate Percevault and Diana Mozcula placed fourth with combined throws of 183′ while Alison Sprong and Kaitlin Egan got a fifth place in javelin with a 168’10″performance.

Samantha Intili and Gabriela Mercurio placed fourth in pole vault with a combined jump of 17′. Overall the team had a seventh place finish with 32 points in a field of more than 20 teams.

On Saturday, the boys’ lacrosse team fell to Columbia High School 7-3. Scoring was evenly split between Brian Marion, Mike Theobald and Jed Tremble, while Ethan Garsman had two assists and Dwight Tucci had seven ground balls. Goalie Jake Facey had six saves on the day. The Hillbilly team, which is now 6-5 on the season, takes on Newark East side at Centennial Field at 4 p.m.

In other Monday action, the baseball team goes up against Newark Academy and the boys’ tennis team takes on Glen Ridge, both at home. The girls’ lacrosse team is away at New Providence and the golf team takes on East Side and West Side high schools at the Weequahic golf course. All of those are 4 p.m. starts. The softball team faces Millburn High School at the F.N. Brown field at 4:30 p.m.
