A while back, Maria Hoogterp started gathering quotations that could be used for practice exercises in her husband Bill’s speaking, presentation and leadership business, Blue Planet Training. One thing led to another, and before she knew it, Hoogterp had herself a book of quotations on speaking, leadership and life.
Speak Only If You Can Improve Upon the Silence offers some pity phrases that you probably know well, like Sir Francis Bacon’s “A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.” But Hoogterp also includes gems from people who aren’t usually regarded as savants, like “Melrose Place” actress Josie Bissett: “Dreams come a size too big so that we may grow into them.”
