The four existing at-large freeholders in Essex County were handily returned to office in Tuesday’s election, but the race was much closer for the seat for District 4, which includes Verona. According to unofficial election results, Leonard M. Luciano narrowly beat Joseph Chiusolo by 12,822 to 12,592 votes. Luciano was running as the quasi-incumbent after having been appointed to his seat this past summer by County Executive Joseph N.DiVincenzo Jr. when Freeholder Linda Lordi Cavanaugh retired before her term expired. Chiusolo, a small business owner, has served as both a Council member and mayor of Cear Grove. Marilynn English, a Verona resident running for one of the at-large seats, won just 2,585 votes.
