H.B. Whitehorne Middle School is bringing in experts in social skills and mental health this Thursday, October 27, to kick off its Family Health Fair and Lecture series. The title of the first lecture, which will run from 7 to 8 p.m. will be ” Understanding Your Child’s Social & Emotional Needs During the Middle School Years”. The program, which is free, will be held in HBW’s annex.
The lecture series is part of something called the Safety Net Project, a three-year program funded by the Partners for Health Foundation of Montclair. The project, which also includes the Mental Health Association of Essex County, aims to enhance positive peer connections, equip all students with improved coping skills and facilitate family access to community resources that can support their needs. Some of the other community groups participating in the Thursday event are The Cope Center, Children Having Individual Learning Differences (C.H.I.L.D.), The First Presbyterian Church, DARE and The Montclair YMCA.
The series is being coordinated by Hebe Schafer, HBW’s social worker, who has more then 20 years experience working with students and their families.
