The NJSIAA Meet of Champions resumes tonight in Old Bridge and let’s hope things go better–for Verona and all involved.
Officials suspended the meet last Thursday because of a threat of thunder and lightning as one of the most-watched races, the boys’ 3200, was nearing its close and the lead runner, Joe Rosa of West Windsor-Plainsboro, seemed headed for a meet and state record.
By that point, however, the day’s heat and humidity had taken its toll on many competitors, including the athletes present from Verona. Erin Smythe finished 29th in the 400 IH, Heather Sweeney was 18th in 1600 with a time of 5:22:56, Rebecca Lee was 18th in shot put with throw of 36:04:75 and Kweku Sapara-Grant was 30th in the long jump.
Sweeney will be back on the track tonight for the girls’ 3200. The event begins at 6 p.m.
